Thall Metal

Thall is an ultra-low-tuned, dissonant offshoot of djent and progressive metal, coined by Sweden’s Vildhjarta and often described by the band as djent’s colder younger brother. It emphasizes tightly gated, staccato down-picking, warped and dissonant chord voicings, and lurching, polymetric grooves, all wrapped in a bleak, oppressive atmosphere. Ambient, reverb-heavy interludes heighten the tension between subterranean lows and piercing highs. The word itself started as an inside joke and became a whole aesthetic.
