Technical thrash metal takes thrash’s speed and aggression and complicates it with progressive-rock complexity, odd time signatures, intricate riffing, and unexpected structural turns. Watchtower, Coroner, and Voivod pioneered it in the mid-to-late 1980s, drawing on jazz, prog, and even classical ideas. The result is cerebral and demanding, prizing musicianship without losing thrash’s bite. Modern bands like Vektor have revived and expanded the style.
