What it is

Stoner metal is the heavier, doomier cousin of stoner rock, built on massive, downtuned, fuzz-soaked riffs, slow-to-mid tempos, and a hypnotic, repetitive groove. It grew in the mid-1990s from Black Sabbath worship, with Sleep and Electric Wizard pushing toward crushing, hallucinatory weight. Vocals can be melodic or harsh, and lyrics gravitate to drugs, the occult, sci-fi, and altered states. It trades stoner rock’s swagger for sheer sonic mass.
