Kawaii metal fuses heavy metal instrumentation with the bright, catchy melodies and cute aesthetic of Japanese idol pop, juxtaposing crushing riffs with sugary vocals and choreographed dance. Japan’s Babymetal pioneered it in the early 2010s, pairing metalcore and power-metal backing with J-pop hooks and idol imagery. The mood is playful and energetic, deliberately colliding the heavy and the adorable. It has since inspired a wave of Japanese acts.
