Death ’n’ roll keeps death metal’s growled vocals and thick, detuned guitars but swaps blast-beat speed for swaggering, groove-driven rock ’n’ roll rhythms. Sweden’s Entombed defined it on 1993’s Wolverine Blues, filtering their buzzsaw death-metal tone through 70s hard-rock swing, and Dutch band Gorefest followed a similar path. The songs are catchy and mid-paced, keeping brutality in the vocals while the riffs strut. It is death metal that grooves rather than blasts.
