What it is

Blackened death metal fuses death metal’s heaviness and precision with black metal’s atmosphere, tremolo riffing, and satanic or occult imagery. It grew out of the late-80s murk of Celtic Frost and crystallized through bands like Belphegor and Angelcorpse before Behemoth’s Satanica-era work made it a global force. Expect blasting drums, raspy-yet-guttural vocals, and riffs that swing between death-metal groove and black-metal iciness, all wrapped in grand, blasphemous themes. It is darker and more ceremonial than straight death metal.
