Southern metal fuses metal’s heaviness with the swagger, groove, and bluesy swing of Southern rock, producing a thick, whiskey-soaked sound rooted in the American South. It grew from the 1990s Louisiana and North Carolina scenes, where Corrosion of Conformity and Down merged sludge, doom, and groove metal with Lynyrd Skynyrd-style riffs. Tempos are mid-paced and rolling, the tone warm and dirty, and the attitude proudly regional. It overlaps heavily with sludge and stoner metal.
